This blog was created as a means to get information to the public from the Virginia Port Authority (VPA). We will be posting our press releases, information regarding events and happenings at the port, general information from the state’s maritime and related industries and other various communications here. If you want the latest news from the VPA, be sure to subscribe to our feed.
The VPA is based in Norfolk and is an agency of the Commonwealth that reports to the secretary of transportation. As the state’s lead organization for maritime commerce, the VPA owns and operates four general cargo facilities collectively known as The Port of Virginia. These facilities are located in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News and Front Royal.
The Port of Virginia is one of the Commonwealth’s strongest and most vital economic engines. According to a recent economic impact study conducted by the Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary, the Port of Virginia is directly and indirectly responsible for:
· 343,000 Virginia jobs – 9 percent of the state’s workforce
· $13.5 billion in compensation
· $41 billion in total revenue
The port’s impact is felt throughout Virginia through customers and employers such as MeadWestvaco in Covington; Dollar Tree in Chesapeake; Home Depot in Winchester; Wal-Mart in James City County; Goodyear in Danville and many, many others.
