Norfolk – The Port of Virginia handled 188,658 TEUs in August, an increase of 24 percent when compared with totals from August 2011. Year-to-date, the port has handled 1,363,769 TEUs vs. 1,262,957 TEUs handled during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.
"We continue to set new thresholds on container volumes and that is exciting to see," said Michael Quillen chairman of the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners. "What is more significant is that the market, I believe, is beginning to respond to all that we have prepared for: we have big ships calling that need our 50-foot draft, an increasing demand on rail and we're expanding our market."
Total rail containers handled in August were 34,528, which is a 22.8 percent increase when compared with last August. The year-to-date rail containers total is 247,217 vs. 215,013 for the same period last year; an increase of 15 percent.
The number of containers moved between the Port of Richmond and the Hampton Roads Harbor on the 64 Express barge service in August was 780, which is an increase of 200 percent when compared with last August. The year-to-date total for the barge is up 105 percent: 5,978 containers vs. 2,915 containers handled during the same period in 2011.
In August there were 172 ship calls vs. 151 for the same month last year, an increase of 13.9 percent. The year-to-date ship calls total is 1,310 vs. 1,202 for the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.
Virginia Inland Port (VIP) in August saw a 34.8 percent increase in the number of containers it handled when compared with the same month last year: 3,465 vs. 2,570. Year-to-date, VIP is running about 4.8 percent ahead of last year.
Also in August the breakbulk total was 25,413 tons, which is an increase of 15.3 percent when compared with totals from last August. The year-to-date breakbulk comparison in tons (2012 vs. 2011) has increased 6.6 percent: 237,570 vs. 222,961, respectively.
