The Port of Virginia in July handled 142,171 TEUs, down 30,802 TEUs from the same month last year. From January to July, The Port handled 974,223 TEUs, compared with 1,208,948 the same period in 2008, a change of -19.4 percent.
Breakbulk tonnage was also off in July. The Port handled 19,540 tons of breakbulk material compared with 29,468 tons handled in July 2008. The breakbulk tonnage total from January to July is 144,235, compared with 202,166 tons for the same period last year.
Officials with the Virginia Port Authority said the weak trade statistics can be directly attributed to the world-wide economic slowdown.
The Port's July trade balance was 56 percent exports and 44 percent imports, which is the January-through-July average.
